Kiruddu hospital, residents in dispute over sewage plant land

An ongoing land ownership dispute between Buganda Land Board and an individual could stall the construction of a sewerage plant for Kiruddu Hospital.
Kiruddu Hospital staff, lower Local Government leaders and area residents told a delegation of Opposition MPs that the dispute is likely to delay the project intended for the treatment of sewerage from the health facility.
The Opposition MPs led by the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Betty Aol Ocan were in Kiruddu, as part of their oversight visits to hospitals around Kampala to establish the staffing levels, services offered and infrastructure at the facilities.
Part of the piece of land offered for the sewerage project is being claimed by resident of the area, Stephen Lwanga, who has threatened to put a caveat on it.
Hon. Allan Ssewanyana (DP, Makindye West) said that the community was experiencing sanitation problems due to overflow from the hospital septic tank.
"The residents are having a hard time with the spill overs from the hospital.  The treatment plant needs to be finalized as soon as possible because this is destroying the relation between the hospital and the locals," he said.
The Ag. Director of Kiruddu Hospital, Dr. Charles Kabugo, confirmed the land dispute but said that they had devised a temporary solution to the sewerage problem.

Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Betty Aol Ocan, promised to follow up the issue of the land dispute saying that this wrangle was going to delay the process of the construction intended to finally solve the sewerage problem. She said it was necessary to sort out the problem before funds are returned to government at the end of the financial year.
"We are going to find out from the Ministry and the Buganda Land Board about these claims. The issue needs to be resolved very fast,” she said.
The delegation also comprised Hon Betty Muzanira (FDC, Rukunjuri district) and Hon Simon Oyet (FDC, Nwoya).
