Build on the merits of NRA liberation struggle – Oulanyah

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has said Ugandans should not be misguided towards the destabilisation of the peace that the country is experiencing. He added that the country has made great strides with commendable notice to the forefathers who fought to secure the stability of the nation.
“If anybody should come and try to tell you to go back to the situation of 33 years ago where there were wars in this country, kindly tell them no, never again. Let us work to consolidate the peace and shape the future of the country,” Oulanyah said.
The Deputy Speaker made the remarks in commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle. Speaking to Christians who had gathered for the Sabbath prayers at SDA Church Najjanankumbi on Saturday, 26 January 2019, Oulanyah alluded to the Biblical story of David and Goliath in relation to the 1980s NRA struggle.
He said just like David took down the legendary gigantic Goliath, also symbolically did the few soldiers of the NRA confront and defeat an already built up state apparatus.
“So the symbolic significance of today is for one to understand the importance of what they can do to make this country better. The story of the NRM’s 33 years in Government is only half-told if you do not look at the history of Uganda from Independence in 1962,” Oulanyah added.
The Deputy Speaker also referred to the Biblical prophets Ezra and Nehemiah who built God’s sacred place for sanctification, urging Ugandans to pick a leaf and build the Church, which in turn would build the country. He also called on Ugandans to respect the rule of law, for peace to prevail in Uganda.
The NRM national treasurer, Hon. Rose Namayanja, told the congregation that the first phase of the church extension project was estimated at shs2.5 billion, adding that over shs60 million had been collected so far.
Oulanyah contributed shs5 million towards the construction of the church. Others MPs who attended the event included the Government Chief Whip Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa and Mawokota South County MP Hon. John Bosco Seguya.
