Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa has called for investigation in the recent killing of Uganda Cranes footballer, David Owori and asked government to address the security challenges reflected by the incident.

"This is fundamentally a security matter. We are seeing people being attacked by criminals wielding iron bars and other blunt objects," Tayebwa said as he presided over the House sitting on Wednesday, 05 August 2026.

Owori, who also played for local club SC Villa was attacked on the evening of Tuesday, 04 August 2026 by unknown assailants near Kibuye Primary School in the capital, Kampala. He succumbed to injuries at Case Hospital.

During the sitting, the Chief Opposition Whip, Hon. Paul Mwiru, raised the issue and asked government to provide a statement about the incident.

Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister without Portfolio, Hon. Rukia Isanga Nakadama, conveyed the Government's condolences and indicated that an official response would be made after consultations.

Tayebwa, urged the Executive to task the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding Owori's death, ensuring those responsible are prosecuted, and reviewing broader concerns over violent crime.

"The Minister of Internal Affairs should ensure thorough investigations are conducted, justice is delivered for the family, and Government reviews the broader security concerns affecting many Ugandans,” he said.

“David Owori is well known because of his contribution to sports, but there are many ordinary citizens losing their lives under similar circumstances whose names never reach this House," he added.
