Members of Parliament have started taking oath to mark the start of the 12th Parliament. The event is being held amidst pomp and dance at Parliament Building.
Elections of legislators were held on 15 January 2026.
These are the highlights of what is happening at Parliament Building:
- 8.00am: the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces Band played the National and East African anthems.
- 8.05am: the Clerk to Parliament read out the Proclamation, quoting the relevant laws giving him powers to administer oaths to Members-elect.
- Thereafter the first Member-elect, Enos Asiimwe Kinywamachunda (NRM, Kabula County, Lyantonde district) was called up the podium. He took both the oath of allegiance and oath of Member of Parliament. The oaths are provided for in the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution of Uganda.

The Oath of Allegiance:
- I,_____________[Name]___________________, swear in the name of the Almighty God/solemnly affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Republic of Uganda and that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. [So help me God]
The Oath of Member of Parliament:
- I,__________[Name]___________________, swear in the name of the Almighty God/solemnly affirm that I will give faithful service to this Parliament and support and uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda as by law established. [So help me God.]
- He was followed by Jeje Ababakhar Odongo (independent, Orungo County, Amuria district). Next was the first lady, Sylvia Alinaitwe Tumuheirwe (NRM, Rukiga district woman representative).
The swearing in of new legislators will continue through Thursday 14 May and end on Friday, 15 May 2026.
The event is being broadcast on selected local TV and radio stations and Parliament social media.
