Tayebwa commends Stanbic on youth skilling initiative

Another successful Annual National Schools Championship has earned Stanbic Bank accolades from the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa.

Presiding at this year’s National Schools Championship Grand Finale held on Friday, 15 July 2022 at the Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Tayebwa said the bank was creating an enabling environment for students to engage in businesses at an early stage.

“Stanbic Bank has helped you to put your foot on the pedal, now it is you to run the race,” Tayebwa said before gifting each of the 20 star students Shs1 million to boost their ‘start up’ businesses.

The winners of the seventh schools championship also showcased their products including, fertilisers, washing soap, reagents used in laboratories and t-shirts made from African fabric.

Through the competitions, the bank provides students with startup capital and financial management training. Subsequently, the students develop products to address issues within their communities.

He said: “As young people, you need to be frugal, separate business income from personal income, even now when you meet me outside and I give you Shs10,000 save part of it.”

The Deputy Speaker also cautioned them about the need to develop the right character if they were to excel in business. “I have come to understand that in business especially for young entrepreneurs, the most important investment is character,” Tayebwa added.

The Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank, Anne Juuko, said she was impressed with the students’ creativity exhibited during the competitions, a sign for a brilliant generation ahead.

“We spend billions each year on this programme and we are happy we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of these youths. The stalls here show how creative they are and for example, Busoga S.S. has made a fertiliser from human waste,” Juuko said.

The bank, she added, was working with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards to certify the students’ products such that they meet the standards on the market.
