Speaker Kadaga supports manufacture of sanitizer for Coronavirus

The Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has said that an American scientist has donated a patent to Uganda for the manufacture of a sanitiser that instantly kills the coronavirus.

The Speaker who chaired the House on Tuesday, 17 March 2020 said that there had been a lot of debate on social media following her revelation that two Ugandan scientists were developing a sanitiser using a patent donated by US based Professor Sarfaraz Khan Niazi.

“Professor Sarfaraz Khan Niazi developed an effective advanced sanitiser that has been proved to kill the COVID19 virus instantly. Tests were recently conducted in the US and Glasgow with a certificate of analysis showing the ability of the product to kill the virus in seconds. The trials are starting today in the United States of America,” said Kadaga.

Kadaga added that Professor Niazi was one of the world’s prolific inventors with more than 100 patents of pharmaceuticals, adding that he had developed more than 3000 formulas which he has donated to DEI Pharmaceuticals to help Uganda become self-sufficient in essential medicines.
“A young man called Mathias Magoola has established two industries; one in Luzira manufacturing malaria and cancer drugs and another in Matugga, which will be the biggest pharmaceutical industry on this continent. This Professor came to assist with setting up that industry,” Kadaga said.
The Speaker took exception to a press statement issued by the Uganda Medical Association, which described the American professor and Magoola as quacks.
“I do not deal with quacks.  I do not think that there is any Ugandan scientist who has done the kind of work this Professor has done. Professor Niazi assisted former US President Barrack Obama in designing the Obama Care and is an advisor of the Food and Drug Administration agency in America,” Kadaga said adding that, “I do hope that these three Doctors; Dr. Richard Idro, Dr. Muhereza Mukuzi and Dr. Misaki Wanyengera, will have the courtesy to apologize for issuing the press statement without first checking with me on what I was talking about”.

Members of Parliament called on Ugandans to be more disciplined while addressing national issues, and to also support their fellow Ugandans who come up with innovations and solutions to crises.

“I do not support the action of these doctors. If a person of your caliber makes an error, courtesy would demand that someone comes and explains to you that the message could have been presented in a wrong way. The issue of civil servants going to the press to address issues should end,” said Hon. Elijah Okupa (FDC, Kasilo County) said.

Bukanga County MP, Hon. Stephen Kangwagye commended the Speaker and President Yoweri Museveni for exhibiting the spirit of patriotism by supporting the Ugandan scientists in their venture.
“We have a mindset problem where we believe that there is nothing that Ugandans can develop. Now that there is a Ugandan trying to do good for our people and the world, we need to support him strongly,” said Kangwagye.

Hon. Henry Kibalya (NRM, Bugabula South) called on Government to subsidize the production of sanitisers in the country so as to give an opportunity for mass production and to address the risk of shortages in light of COVID19 precautionary measures.

Kadaga also said that the Parliamentary Commission will hold an emergency meeting to discuss how to manage operations of the institution in current coronavirus situation.
President Museveni is also expected to address the nation tomorrow, on the measures that will be taken to control the spread of the virus.
