Speaker commends Uganda Police on day care centres

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has commended the Uganda Police Force for picking a leaf from Parliament and establishing child-care centres at different police bases across the country.
Kadaga said that the child-care centres would go a long way in easing parental duties for many female police officers which would in turn improve their efficiency at work..
“I am very excited that you are going to set up child-care centres which help mothers in the institution as they ensure that their children are in good care,” said Kadaga.
The Speaker said this while officiating at the second edition of the Uganda Police Force Female Officers National Conference on Friday, 21 February 2020 at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Kadaga said that there was need to set up channels where all police officers effectively address their concerns and challenges.
“The Police leadership needs to find out the circumstances surrounding the workspace of the women in the force so that they can be helped to do their work properly,” Kadaga added.
Assistant Inspector General of Police, Asan Kasingye who represented the Inspector General of Police said that the total representation of female police officers in Uganda stands at 18 per cent compared to the United Nations standard of 30 per cent female representation in organizations.
“There have been gender-blind institutional polices and some cases of sexual harassment which have affected the effectiveness of our female police officers,” Kasingye said.
He added that the Uganda Police Force had launched a gender policy whose implementation strategy began in 2019 that would cater for the handling of issues concerning female officers in the force.
“I would like to report to you that we are going to start a vigorous campaign to recruit as well as promote more female officers to high echelons of the Police,” said Kasingye.
He also called on Parliament to avail more funding to the Police budget to address gender issues in a bid to improve the welfare of majorly female officers especially in terms of police uniforms and operational deployments.
