Parliament mourns Abiriga

When the sun set Friday evening, it wasn’t just marking the end of a day, but with it the sudden demise of Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Yusuf Abiriga.
Together with his driver, Abiriga succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds sustained at the hands of assailants still at large.
Famous for his unflinching admiration of President Yoweri Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement party, Abiriga made a signature look out of his all yellow attires.
Speaker Rebecca Kadaga led national leaders in eulogising the fallen legislator.
In her statement issued by Parliament’s Director Communication and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, Speaker Kadaga asked the security establishment to expedite investigations.
“I urge security services to do everything possible to apprehend the criminals and reassure the country,” read the statement in part.
President Yoweri Museveni visited the deceased’s home early on Saturday to commiserate with the family. He said vigilance will lead to the capture of the criminals. He described Abiriga as “a dedicated supporter and patriotic Ugandan who worked for peace in West Nile.”
Parliament is set to pay tribute to the slain MP on Sunday, 10th June 2018.
In a statement by the Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige, Parliament is to hold a special sitting to pay tribute to the late Abiriga.
Born in Jinja on the 6th of May in 1956, MP Abiriga is survived by nine children and wife Sijali Abiriga.
Abiriga’s murder joins that of other high profile Ugandans killed in a similar manner, the most recent being that of Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Relatedly, a spate of murders and kidnaps of mainly women and girls have rocked the country in recent days.
The growing security concerns is also widely believed to have informed President Museveni’s reorganization of the security services after relieving from duty Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura and Security Minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde.
At the height of their public bickering, Museveni appointed John Martins Okoth Ochola and Gen Elly Tumwine as Inspector General of Police and Security Minister respectively.
MPs have been trouping to the late’s home, together with members of the security services, Cabinet Ministers and a host of local politicians.
There will be a national prayer at Gaddafi National Mosque on Sunday at 7.30am, thereafter the body will be taken to Parliament for tribute.
Abiriga will be buried in Lukudu village, Eramva parish, Rhino Camp Sub County in Arua District.
