Gen. Tumwine to explain himself to House
The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has demanded for a statment from Hon. Gen. Elly Tumwine, Ministry for Security, following a radio interview in which he attacked Parliament over it’s decision on the Nommo Gallery.
During the sitting of Parliament on Thursday, 17th May 2018, Hon. Moses Kasibante, (Indep, Rubaga South) said that Gen. Tumwine made statements demeaning the person of the Speaker and of the House.
“Gen. Tumwine, in an interview with CBS Radio said that neither the Speaker nor the Members of Parliament had any information about the matter concerning Nommo Gallery. He should have come to the House and explained to us instead of insulting this House to which he belongs , “ Kasibante said.
According to the Observer Newspaper, Gen Tumwine was quoted as saying that, “if they built it, let them come and evict me. Parliament is not doing its work properly; they are part of the group that wants the gallery.”
Last week, the House directed Tumwine to pay rent arrears amounting to over Shs1 billion to the Uganda National Cultural Centre and to immediately vacate Nommo Gallery.
Gen. Tumwine owns Creations Limited which has occupied Nommo Gallery since 1998. Tumwine is also one of the ten representatives of the UPDF in Parliament and chairs the Presidential Awards Committee. Kadaga said that time will be allocated to the Minister to make a statement on the same. “I was waiting for us to finalise with the budget process and then he will certainly explain himself to this House. Some issues will have to be forwarded to the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline,” she said.
