Support Seed Schools for better performance - MPs

Legislators have expressed concern over the state of seed schools in rural areas, saying that this is affecting the education standards in mostly rural areas.
Speaking during a plenary sitting on 15 May 2018, Hon. Johnson Muyanja (NRM, Mukono South County) noted that the only secondary school on Kome Island has only 11 teachers out of the 29 promised by Government, with none of them teaching English.
"Government has been promising for almost two years now. Recently, we registered candidates but could not get good grades at all because the teacher there is an S.6 dropout and is not paid by Government," Muyanja said.
He called on the Ministry of Education to address the issue before the resumption of the second term , so as to improve the school’s performance.

Hon. Henry Kibalya (NRM, Bugabula South) noted that the issue of teachers in such schools had not been given adequate attention by the responsible Ministry emphasizing the need for more teachers for English .
"In my constituency, a student will tell you that he only studied English two months ago. The part-time teachers are students who failed to continue with secondary education," he said .
The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga said that during vetting of Commissioners for the Education Service Commission by the Appointments Committee, it was  noted that Uganda required 68,000 teachers, yet there were only 24,000 available.
"The issue of English is important because it is our official language and the language of examinations. We need to get our students ready for mock exams next term," Kadaga said.
State Minister for Sports Charles Bakabulindi noted the urgency of the issue saying, "we have top management meetings where ministers are involved. We have noted the concern and are going to address it."
